Community College students enthusiastically endorse UMAP pre-med seminar

The Health Professional Student Association, in collaboration with the Oklahoma University-Tulsa University School of Community Medicine and Tulsa Community College, completed a pilot of the Undergraduate Medical Accelerator Program (UMAP) on April 23, 2022. Held both in-person and virtually, the event was attended by 12 community college students.

Pre- and post-program surveys were completed by nine of the 12 attendees (75%). While the number of respondents is too low for statistical analysis, the results of the program were encouraging.

The event attracted a diverse group of students. 

Demographic Breakdown

Attendees responded that they found the program useful based on a 5-point Likert scale (1 – Strongly Disagree, 2 – Disagree, 3 – Neither Agree or Disagree, 4 – Agree, 5 – Strongly Agree), as can be seen in the below results of the survey:

The qualitative results of the survey were also positive.

“Even if you’re pretty certain about how/what you need to do before applying to school, the tracking and finding resources provided in the workbook is extremely valuable.”

“It helped me to understand what the process to medical school is going to look like and how I can get there with where I already am.”
